The country of Myanmar (Burma) is still reeling from the vicious destruction caused by Cyclone Nargis in May 2008. The horrendous conditions filled the news, and reports moved the numbers of dead and missing ever higher. The news also reported that traditional methods of aid were not reaching the Burmese victims. Tragically, aid organizations found themselves standing by outside the borders, their help refused. However, God had a plan to not only provide help, but also to share His message of love! Within 48 hours of the cyclone, Empower Ministries was at work effectively reaching out with love and compassion through a mighty network of national churches. This network was an immediate lifeline for tens of thousands of people who thankfully received rice, water, emergency shelter and other vital supplies. Through this practical help, the Christians in the country garnered respect and appreciation, along with countless opportunities to share the hope found in Jesus. The incredible need continues in this land even a year after the cyclone. In some areas, rats are infesting crops and food supplies, not only devouring what little food is available, but also causing sickness and death. Disease abounds in the hardest hit areas. So, where is the good news? In the land of Myanmar, which is so vividly associated with multitudes of orange-robed Buddhist monks, an incredible shift is occurring. Often, people are most receptive to the Gospel when they are facing incredible challenges. Such is the case in Myanmar and as the challenges continue, so does the growth in the Church of Jesus Christ. Through the compassionate assistance that the national believers are providing to the suffering people in Myanmar, lives are being changed for eternity. People are eagerly asking about the hope that the believers have in Jesus. Dozens of Buddhist monks have come to know Jesus as Saviour and they are now studying God's Word. God continues to spread His message of love around the world in very creative ways.
