"How great you are, O Sovereign Lord!
There is no one like you, and there is no God but you..."
— II Samuel 7:22

It is now over 12 years since I first "collided" with this chapter! David has just shared the ultimate dream of his heart with his trusted confidant, Nathan. Nathan, the prophet, has confirmed the dream by solidly declaring: "Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you." Nathan returns to his home for a night's sleep and likely David could hardly sleep with the excitement and planning to build a temple for the Lord. What a difference one night can make! What a difference one word of the Lord can make! The word of the Lord came to Nathan with the message to basically tell David, "Thanks, but no thanks!" Can you imagine the trembling in Nathan's voice as he approaches David with the light of day to deliver the message! He knew well that this is King David. With one utterance David could dismiss Nathan's message and his life and no one would ever know! David could build a temple as he dreamed because only Nathan knew that God actually had a higher plan!

What a dramatic moment as Nathan likely waited with bated breath for David's response! There is no angry retort; there is no "how dare you say such a thing!"... No! David moves quickly from exercising his lesser earthly sovereignty to yield, embrace and even celebrate the sovereignty of God! As the king "went and sat before the Lord" he responds in an outpouring of humble acceptance and declaration of awe before His God! He embraces the announcement of the "unseen" house that the Lord will build for him! He knows that any earthly temple is no comparison to this promise that to the "house" of David, the Messiah will come! In his celebration of the Lord's eternal plan trumping all natural aspirations, David calls the Lord by the name, O Sovereign Lord, seven times! He marvels how the Lord has selected his family and calls this divine decision one "for the sake of your word... and according to your will." (vs.21)

What a dramatic window into the heart of David! What a viewing of the choice we have if indeed we arrive into a moment of the Lord's "no"... or (perhaps more difficult) "no thank you." We are not talking about a listless, passive resignation "if it be your will, O God"; this is the scenario instead when we are called upon to relinguish a dream... not to the devil but to the Lord! We need this chapter in our Bible and in our lives! David does not dodge obedience nor resent sovereignty. He does not chafe at the divine decision. David does not equate sovereignty with unpredictableness that would necessitate us guarding ourselves from God! Rather, he finds in that sovereignty the "greatness" of God and actually takes rest and finds security in the trustworthiness of His words (vs. 28). And so can we! His "higher" will always be better! We have a God who can be trusted... our dreams are safe with Him!
