"What can I do for you before I am taken from you?" There are two men who walked along the road on that day that would determine both personal destiny and an anointing that would change a nation. The one is nearing the end of his journey of bold participation with God. The other walks with an easier step and is oblivious to all voices around him until he hears this amazing invitation. Simply put, Elijah is asking Elisha: "What do you want?" This offer would never be given to either a novice or one with shallow capacity! Biblical historians tell us that Elisha by this point may have walked with the prophet Elijah for ten years. As he has accompanied the anointing, the anointing has carved out a place of great capacity within him! That is the nature of the anointing... the anointing causes a larger place within that can only be filled with more from God! And, there is an agony when you embrace this longing for enlargement: you can never again be satisfied with either a previous portion or previous participation! You've tasted! Now you will not be satisfied until you "see" it for yourself! Elisha is ready with his reply: "A double portion, please!" It is more than the memory of his initial encounter with Elijah that has stirred this response. It is more than even the fact that God Himself has named his name as the successor to the prophet of God. It is more than the reality of what had to "burn" in order to follow in the call. The scriptures say that Elisha's reputation was of one who "poured water on the hands" of Elijah. (II Kings 3:11) Some would disdain such menial tasks if you knew you were the "heir apparent" to the anointing. However, Elisha served and used his opportunity to observe at close range the activity of the anointing! Ten years of the journey now brings him to the pivotal moment of divine invitation: "What do you want?" He's ready... and so is God! Many who read this are at a similar transitional point. A very real call and faithful years of service have brought you along to this moment. The longing to replicate what you've already seen and to participate in what you've never yet seen has risen (with agony!) within you. The anointing has indeed carved out a capacity that only a divine deposit of His Presence and His power can fill. Others may settle for less but you will only be satisfied with an increase: "a double portion"! You're ready with a capacity to receive. Get ready to hold in your hand what you've observed with your eyes! One greater than Elijah is asking:"What do you want?" With rejoicing, Rev. Peggy I. Kennedy
