range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him." II Chronicles 16:9 Oh what tender words, "The angel of the Lord found Hagar..." There is very little else which is "tender" about this passage in Genesis 16. The desert is harsh; the water is sparse; the situation reeks with injustice and the future is totally veiled! To that location and desperate situation comes the living Presence of the Lord! His voice breaks the agonizing silence of the desert by first addressing Hagar by name. In the words, "Hagar, servant of Sarai," is the full reference to her dismal reality! It was the choice of others that brought her to this banishment. She was but mere chattel in the household of Abram and Sarai. She was the surrogate womb for the longed for offspring. She was now carrying the consequences of their misguided plan to assist God in fulfilling their destiny. The voice continues with two questions: "Where have you come from, and where are you going?" Hagar is all too ready to answer the first question...she has come from an impossible situation reeking with injustice and victimization. She cannot answer the second question. She does not know where she is going. Any pathway of hope and a future is veiled beyond this temporary oasis of a spring in her desert. Yet the voice of the Lord prophetically pierces that veil and opens up the way. In that moment everything changes for Hagar! Now carrying the promise, she responds by giving a name to the Lord who spoke to her: "I have now seen the One who sees me." Have we yet had that encounter and given that Name to our wonderful Lord? His voice and the prophetic promise is more than coincidence or even comfort! We are connected! Long after Hagar resumes her journey, the nearby well bears the name which translates the truth deeply into our mind and spirit: He is the "Living One Who sees me". That connection with His Divine Presence and purposes changes my journey, too! The theological truth of His Omnipresence translates into a most intimate connection: He is Living and I have now seen the One Who sees me. He is more than distantly aware; He is intimately engaged with every detail of my heart. Out of that amazing revelation comes strength for the journey forward as I venture with Him. Out of that intimate connection I step onto the pathway past the veil into all that He has prepared for me!
