| Futile? No! |

your love, O Lord, endures forever- do not abandon the works of your hands." Psalm 138:8 Picture this: there's a fairly large crowd gathered in the community coffee shop with conversations buzzing and filling the air.Over at one table the tones are frustrated and jaws are set. "It's futile to serve God!...What have we gained by observing His requirements?"This is no heathen cluster. From all observation, they are those who have had experience with God and at least a measure of participation with Him. Across the room is a simultaneous conversation. An atmosphere of confident expectation and humble affirmation arises from that conversation. Words like "faithful" and "He will fulfill" can be overheard coming from that table. And, we are not the only ones listening! God is! He is not only listening, He is taking notes! This is the amazing and graphic picture painted for us in Malachi 3:13-18. We have stepped into this most unique hour described by the Spirit through the prophet Malachi. Right now there are simultaneous conversations happening among those who carry His Name. Simultaneous yes...but similar? No! There's something about "now" and the accumulating atmosphere of fear and uncertainty which has become the breeding ground for the vice-grip of futility coming upon some of the people of the Lord! They review their expectation and investment of faith through the jaded lens of the immediate and come up with a contagious counter-faith summed up in a word: "futile"! And yet, right in the same scenario is a far different and selected response. The fear of God and the honouring of His Name pervade that conversation. And, our faithful God is not only listening and taking notes, He is marking that conversation of faith and expectation and labelling those at that table as His 'treasured possession'! We are being moved into an hour in which He will make a distinction between those two groups. The glorious assurance is, we get to select our response! It appears that the prophet Isaiah may have had his own moment teetering on that perilous abyss of futility. We hold our breath as we read Isaiah 49:4: "I have laboured to no purpose; I have spent my strength in vain and for nothing." Yet, the speaker quickly draws back from that dangerous edge and declares: "Yet what is due me is in the Lord's hand, and my reward is with my God." Whew! We are more than relieved! We celebrate with him as the Lord responds with not a rebuke but a commissioning into a wider sphere of influence! And, we get to choose our confession, too! We get to choose our conversation! We get to hastily shift from a table of futility to a conversation among those with expectant faith! Make that move now! Not only is the Lord listening; He is taking notes! He's making the distinction. Receive His grace for a whole new round of honoured participation with Him!He will fulfill His purposes for you!
