“The One enthroned in heaven laughs…”
Rarely would I be comfortable to make such a declaration: “…God is laughing…the One enthroned in heaven laughs!” But, this is exactly the prophetic word that I began to hear deep within and then that I heard coming out of my mouth! I am likely much more comfortable with a weeping God, a tenderly attentive God, etc. However, here was God saying:”I am also a laughing God…” This in no way was referring to any perceived moment of frivolous divine activity.Rather, this was a statement being issued from the throne! This divine proclamation was all about our God’s ultimate and supreme authority. Our world is swirling with nations raging and supposed plots against our God and against all we hold dear. And, you may find that happening even in your personal arena. For right now the Lord is pulling back the veil and revealing His throne. The sound coming from that throne is not only the amazing background of worship and glory, but also another sound: laughter. This is truly “holy laughter”; our God is the enthroned One.
There are other glimpses in scripture of this sound coming from the throne…from the place of His supreme position. When the ark was “captured” by the Philistines and placed in supposed submission in the temple of their god Dagon, there was the profound demonstration of divine supremacy. Dagon ultimately bowed and “fell apart” before the magnificence of our God! (See I Samuel 5). Daniel could hear Nebuchadnezzar’s arrogant boasting exalting himself “above all”. However, in Daniel 4 this boastful “royal authority” was about to be “put out to pasture” (literally!!). When he is restored to sanity it is a humbled Nebuchadnezzar who now exalts the Lord God as the One with an eternal kingdom. An amazing revelation of our God rolls out from his lips: “He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand.” (Daniel 4:35).
What is to be our response to this sound of laughter coming from the throne of our God? We can rule out any careless presumption or other glib response. Rather, such a powerful revelation of His ultimate authority brings us low and humbles us before our exalted and enthroned One! In Acts 4:23-31 the apostles quote Psalm 2. They have just faced the “authorities” of their day. Will they draw back and simply ask for refuge? No! As they declare the divine supremacy of their God they ask for a new boldness to proclaim His word! They are thus ushered into the next round of demonstration of the supernatural! No wonder the Lord chose to speak to me and through me of the sound of divine laughter coming from the throne! Our day demands a response in alignment with that revelation of His exaltation! Humbly but confidently we align ourselves with Him and His ultimate authority. We are to “be still and know that He is God”. But, this is not a license for silence! Rather, the rest of the verse calls out to us:”…I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
