“How will this be…?
The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you…”
From Luke 1:34-35
It was a moment of announcement. It was a moment of calling. It was a moment of commissioning. It was a moment of empowering. In this moment of divine encounter the messenger angel, Gabriel, came to Mary with an announcement awaited through the ages. God’s promise of a Saviour was about to be fulfilled. As Mary received this word, the most reasonable question arises: “How will this be…?” This question does not really matter as much if asked by those who are simply observing from the bleachers. However, Mary now realizes that she is on the playing field of God’s divine activity. It is not a question springing from doubt, but a question which is stirred by the reality that when God desires to include us in His plan, it really always seems impossible! She is not rebuked; instead, the angel responds to her inquiry.
At the heart of “how” will be both the Presence and the power of the Holy Spirit. We do not have to wait until Acts 1 and 2 to be introduced to this association of “dunamis” power with the Holy Spirit. Here in Luke 1 the dunamis power is declared. Just days ago I “saw” this for the first time in this passage. The familiar concept of the Spirit’s “dunamis” power includes power of birthing! This is an essential discovery for “such a time as this”. The Lord’s callings and current commissionings cannot be fulfilled by natural strength (power). Rather, the Lord who is calling many right now to “bring forth” His desired purposes provides the “dunamis power” for birthing those purposes. In another recent setting during worship I “saw” by the Spirit the letters I-M-P-O-S-S-I-B-L-E held up before us. As we worshipped suddenly the two letters to the left, I-M, separated off further to the side and the remaining word was before us: P-O-S-S-I-B-L-E! Everything changed in that moment! The Spirit spoke further and said that our amazing and mighty God is the I AM(great divine “play on words and letters”!) When we clearly see the I AM, “impossible changes to possible”. All of that began to happen for Mary in Luke chapter 1 as the angel continues, “For nothing is impossible with God.”
Mary’s “yes” that day to the announcement of the Lord resulted in the promised Saviour being born. Our “yes” matters, too! For every one who concludes accurately that they cannot produce the things of God in the flesh, there is the accompanying yielding to the Lord to receive His dunamis power to make the birthing possible. I sense the Lord is right now releasing His dunamis power to those who are being called to participate with Him! Psalm 29 is all about the majestic, powerful-packed voice of the Lord. The voice of the Lord there contains “birthing power”: His voice “makes the deer give birth.” (Psalm 29:9 NKJV) If you have been “carrying a word” that seems to defy fulfillment, that is about to change! The God of “birthing power” will overshadow you. His declared purposes will come forth!
